RIT/NTID Diversity Spotlight

Full name of the subject of the spotlight.

Marguerite Carrillo

Senior Lecturer

NTID Department of ASL and Interpreting Education

What is your nationality?
I am a proud 2nd generation Mexican-American. My grandfather emigrated from Mexico.

What or who has been your biggest cultural influence?
My biggest cultural influence is the community in my hometown – Las Cruces, New Mexico – 40 miles north from the Mexican border. More than half of the population in that town identify themselves as Hispanics, and I have always felt at home there. The community varies from teachers, friends and loved ones. They allowed and supported me to embrace my Mexican-American identity.

What would you like people to know about your culture?
We will support each other like family; sometimes we will sacrifice to support one another from the community. However, trust has to be built before offering or receiving support from others.

What is your favorite food?
Chile Rellenos (egg battered cheese stuffed peppers), Pork Tamales and Biscochitos (New Mexican cookies).

What is a fun fact about yourself?
I cannot go any day without roasted green chiles – I usually have 20 pounds of fresh green chile shipped from my hometown that I roast and freeze for year-round eating!
